Adjusting Your Home as You Age

1 minute estimated reading time

It is no secret that as you get older, your body is not as lithe as it used to be. Movements might not be as fluid or quick as they had been. However, wanting to keep your independence is important to you. To do that, you have to start thinking realistically about your current abilities and putting in safeguards you need to keep yourself safe and functioning independently. Here are a few tips that will help you get started.

  • Declutter your house to ensure you have plenty of space to walk around. Less clutter also means less risk of falls.
  • Make sure all rugs have anti-slipping pads.
  • Cover furniture corners to prevent injuries if you accidentally bump into them.
  • Make sure every room has proper lighting, including walk-in closets. Use nightlight to make it easy to see at night.
  • Install light switches at the top and bottom of your staircases.
  • If your home has different floor levels, use proper markings and make sure they are visible.
  • To prevent fall risks, use cord covers for all cords and cables or secure them out of the way, behind furniture.

Another idea to consider is to purchase a medical alert device. These do help in an emergency when a prompt response is vital.
