Sunshine Safety for Summer

2 minutes estimated reading time

Ah, summer! We’re returning to the “new normal” we dreamed about all last year! This summer is especially exciting for many of us because we can now enjoy gatherings with friends and family, live events, and cookouts. However, we can’t throw caution to the wind regarding safety. Ohio summers are known to be hot, humid, and of course, sunny, meaning we need to take extra measures to protect ourselves when outdoors.

Country Court shared with readers this month a list of sunshine safety tips. These tips in our newsletter benefit those with sensitive skin issues, seniors and small children, etc. Still, everyone could benefit from a bit of advice. Where to begin?

Let’s start by discussing heat stroke, whose effects can turn a fun day in the sun into a days-long hospital visit. It should go without saying, but avoid wearing restrictive clothing, non-breathable fabrics, and dark colors. If you’re taking the family out, you might want to avoid full exposure during the hottest parts of the day (around 1:00-3:00pm) and opt for a little AC or shade instead. Plus, everyone should up their fluid intake to replace what they lose in sweat and then some.

As for the sun’s rays, it’s best to prevent skin damage by using SPF 30 or higher–and don’t forget to reapply if you’ll be outside for prolonged periods! Hats and sunglasses can also prevent UV radiation to the eyes. If you take special medication, you’ll want to consult your doctor about safe outdoor activities because some ingredients can make you more vulnerable to sun damage.

One last tip from Country Court: never leave anyone (pets included) in a hot car! High temperatures in an enclosed space are stifling and can be deadly, especially for seniors. Whatever your plans, we encourage you to follow our recommendations to have a safe summer.
